Prices of veg thali decreased due to potatoes, onions and tomatoes becoming cheaper.
According to CRISIL report, the cost of veg thali has decreased due to fall in the prices of potatoes, onions and tomatoes. The price of onion has decreased by 46%. The reason for this was good arrival of Rabi crop and increasing availability in the market. Potato prices have fallen by 31% as large-scale stock has been released from cold storage units.
Tomato prices have also decreased by 8% due to good supply. Potatoes and tomatoes account for 24% of the cost of a veg thali. Apart from this, the price of pulses also declined by 16%.
Due to increase in price of chicken, the price of non-veg thali increased in September.
The reason for the monthly increase in the price of non-veg thali was the price of broilers i.e. chicken. Its price has increased by 10% on an annual basis. The broiler accounts for 50% of the cost of a non-veg thali. However, due to fall in the prices of vegetables and pulses, the price of non-veg thali has come down on an annual basis.
At the same time, the price of vegetable oil has increased by 21% and the price of LPG cylinder by 6% on an annual basis, otherwise both the plates could have become even cheaper.
This is how the average cost of a thali is calculated.
- CRISIL has calculated the average cost of preparing a thali at home based on current food prices in North, South, East and West India. Monthly changes affect the expenses of the common man.
- CRISIL data also reveals the ingredients that drive changes in the price of a thali, including cereals, pulses, broilers (chicken), vegetables, spices, edible oil and cooking gas.
- Veg thali consists of roti, vegetables (onion, tomato and potato), rice, dal, curd and salad. Whereas for non-veg thali, chicken has been included instead of lentils.
