Tech Mahindra CEO and MD Mohit Joshi announced that the company is developing an indigenous sovereign large language model (LLM) with 1 trillion parameters as part of the Government of India’s IndiaAI Mission.
In September, the government selected Tech Mahindra along with seven other entities, including Fractal Analytics and BharatGen, an IIT Bombay consortium, to build foundational LLMs under the initiative. The IIT Bombay-led model is also expected to feature 1 trillion parameters.
In AI terminology, “parameters” represent the internal variables that a model learns during training, enabling it to identify complex patterns and relationships in language data.
Speaking at Tech Mahindra’s Q2 FY26 earnings conference, Joshi said, “We are honoured to be recognised by the Government of India as a key player in the prestigious IndiaAI Mission. This aligns with the government’s vision to bolster leadership in AI. As part of the mission, we are developing an indigenous sovereign large language model with 1 trillion parameters — a significant technical milestone.” He added that the model would be among the largest AI systems currently under development globally, reflecting the company’s commitment to driving productivity, innovation, and AI assurance through its “AI Delivered Right” strategy.
For the quarter ended September 30, 2025, Tech Mahindra reported a 4.5% year-on-year decline in net profit to Rs 1,195 crore, even as revenue from operations rose 5.1% to Rs 13,995 crore, driven by strength in its banking and manufacturing verticals. Sequentially, the company’s net profit and revenue grew 4.7% and 4.8%, respectively, despite headwinds from US tariff uncertainty and a tightening visa regime.
