Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Lachit Borphukan on Lachit Diwas, honoring his heroism and leadership in safeguarding Assam and halting Mughal expansion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to Lachit Borphukan, the Ahom military commander revered for halting the Mughal Empire’s expansion into the Northeast, on his birth anniversary.
Calling him a “symbol of true leadership,” Prime Minister Modi said the “heroism” of the legendary Ahom Commander continues to inspire generations. PM Modi also acknowledged his contribution in “safeguarding the exemplary culture of Assam.”
In a post on X, the Prime Minister wrote, “On Lachit Diwas, we remember Lachit Borphukan, a symbol of courage, patriotism and true leadership. His heroism continues to inspire generations. He played a key role in safeguarding the exemplary culture of Assam.(sic)”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to the Ahom Commander, describing him one of India’s “greatest warriors” in history.
“Tributes to one of the greatest warriors of our history, Ahom General Lachit Barphukan Ji, on his Jayanti,” the Union Home Minister tweeted.
In his post, Amit Shah highlighted Barphukan’s “unflinching patriotism, invincible valor, and unparalleled military leadership,” noting that his strategic brilliance not only protected Assam and the Northeast from Mughal invasions but also preserved the region’s cultural identity.
Shah said Barphukan’s life stands as a “lighthouse of inspiration for patriots forever,” stressing the enduring significance of his heroism in India’s historical and cultural narrative.
“His unflinching patriotism, invincible valor, and unparalleled military leadership not only shielded Assam and the rest of our Northeast from the onslaught of the Mughals but also secured the region’s precious cultural heritage. His life will remain a lighthouse of inspiration for patriots forever,” he further wrote.
