Google CEO Sundar Pichai spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, October 14, discussing India’s growing role in the global technology landscape, advances in artificial intelligence, and Google’s continued investment in the country’s digital economy.
In a post shared on X, Pichai said, ‘Great to speak with India PM Narendra Modi to share our plans for the first-ever Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam – a landmark development.” He added that the new hub would combine gigawatt-scale computing capacity, an international subsea gateway and large-scale renewable energy infrastructure to bring cutting-edge AI technology closer to Indian users and enterprises.
“This investment will help accelerate AI innovation and drive growth across the country,” Pichai said. The Visakhapatnam hub will connect to Google’s global network of AI centres across 12 countries and is designed to support large-scale training, data storage, and high-performance computing for industries such as healthcare, education, agriculture and logistics.

PM Modi hails launch of Google AI Hub
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the launch of Google’s first-ever AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, describing it as a landmark step towards building a Viksit Bharat and ensuring “AI for All.” In a post on X, PM Modi said the multi-faceted investment, which includes gigawatt-scale data center infrastructure, will democratize access to cutting-edge technology, strengthen India’s digital economy, and cement the nation’s position as a global technology leader.
Boost for AI infrastructure, startups and youth
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed Google’s announcement as a defining step towards building India’s AI infrastructure and advancing Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a technology-led economy.
“Today, Google has announced a $15 billion investment to establish an AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh,” Vaishnaw said while speaking to the media. “In line with the Prime Minister’s vision, the world’s leading technology companies are establishing their infrastructure in India. This will boost AI infrastructure, startups, research and the youth.”
He said the hub would play a key role in India’s AI Mission and help build a new generation of skilled professionals ready for global opportunities. “With strong digital infrastructure, we can reskill and upskill our youth to prepare them for the AI era. This data centre will not only support startups but also enable innovation across sectors,” he said.
The announcement was made at Google’s ‘Bharat AI Shakti’ event in New Delhi. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian described the Visakhapatnam centre as the company’s largest AI investment outside the US, calling it a long-term commitment to India’s digital transformation.
“This gigawatt-scale AI hub will house data locally, connect through subsea cables and power AI-driven solutions for India and the wider region,” Kurian said. He added that Google’s network infrastructure would act as a digital backbone linking multiple regions of India and other parts of Asia.
Kurian highlighted Google’s deep roots in India, noting that the company employs 14,000 people across five locations and manufactures its devices domestically. “We’re proud of our 21-year journey in India. This project will help scale our efforts to multiple gigawatts and serve as a global connectivity hub,” he said.
Vaishnaw also urged Google to explore opportunities in the Andaman Islands for undersea cable connectivity to ease pressure on existing routes through Singapore and enhance India’s digital access across the Indo-Pacific.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, reacting to the announcement, praised the initiative as “a reflection of PM Modi’s visionary leadership”, saying India is now positioned as “a digital fountainhead” ready to lead in AI and quantum technologies.
