For most Indian students, securing a job at global giants like Google, Microsoft, or Amazon seems possible only with a B.Tech degree from IIT or NIT, or an MBA from IIM. However, Himani Gangwar from Uttar Pradesh has proven this notion wrong.
Despite coming from a non-IIT background, she landed a high-paying role at Google through her grades, skills, and relentless hard work. Her success serves as a reminder that ability, passion, and perseverance matter more than degrees and prestigious institutions.
Who is Himani Gangwar?
Himani hails from a modest family in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, and does not come from an IIT or NIT background. She pursued engineering from a non-IIT institute, a path often seen as limiting by students. Yet her journey demonstrates that determination and effort are far more important than the name of one’s college.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Himani completed her Class 12 at Delhi Public School, Ghaziabad, scoring an impressive 97.2%. With a keen interest in technology and computer science, she joined the IT branch of Delhi Engineering College for her B.Tech. Consistently excelling, she ranked among the top three students for four consecutive semesters.
Her passion for programming and software development deepened during this period, as she actively pursued online courses, coding platforms, and open-source projects. Alongside academics, Himani was vice-captain of her college basketball team, honing teamwork and leadership skills that later contributed to her professional growth.
Journey to Google
Currently, Himani works as a Software Development Engineer Level-3 at Google. For such a role, companies place greater emphasis on problem-solving ability, coding expertise, and technical depth rather than just a degree. Himani’s selection stands as proof that consistent learning and skill-building are the true differentiators in competitive recruitment.
Motivation for Non-IITian
Every year, lakhs of aspirants prepare for the JEE, fearing that without admission to IIT or NIT their careers might stall. Himani’s journey is a source of inspiration for them. She has shown that the adage ‘where there is a will, there is a way’ holds true; success ultimately depends on skills, persistence, and self-belief.
Skills vs Degree
Himani firmly believes that while a degree may open the first door, it is knowledge and practical skills that determine long-term success. Global companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft now prioritise problem-solving abilities, coding expertise, and innovative thinking over institutional tags.
For students, the key lesson is to invest more in building practical skills and adaptability, rather than relying solely on a degree or the reputation of their college.
