Under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign, the Election Commission of India has removed the names of about 5.2 crore ineligible voters from the voter lists of 12 states and union territories of the country, which is about 10.2 percent of the total voters in these states. The Commission says that this campaign was conducted with the aim of making the voter list clean and accurate, in which the names of absent, transferred, dead, double registered and other ineligible voters have been removed, so that the scope for fake voting can be eliminated.
The Commission said that the first phase of SIR was started in Bihar. After this, SIR campaign was started in 11 states and one union territory like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. A total of 51 crore voters were examined during the campaign, out of which 10.2% names were removed as they were found absent, dead or fake. The Commission has taken this step with the aim of making the voter list pure and accurate. In this process, election data from Andaman-Nicobar to Kerala was scrutinized and lakhs of new names were also added.
Most names cut in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
According to the data, maximum 16.6% names were removed in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. After this, 13.2% more in Uttar Pradesh Gujarat 13.1% names have been trimmed. In Chhattisgarh also, names of 11.3% voters were excluded from the list. This rate was 10.9% in Bengal, where more than 27 lakh names were removed through the judicial process. There were a large number of people in these states who had either been permanently transferred or had died.
‘6.5 crore never voted’
During the SIR campaign, it was found that 13 crore people were absent from their registered addresses, while 3.1 crore people had migrated to other states.
Apart from this, there were about 6.5 crore voters in the voter list who never voted. Due to this, there was a possibility of fake voting. Therefore, by removing them, a pure and accurate voter list has been prepared. Now after purification, a total of 45.8 crore voters are registered in these 12 states. west bengal and Tamil Nadu have recorded a net decline of 20.9% and 10% respectively, while Puducherry has seen a net decline of 1% in the number of voters. The number of voters has decreased by 5.7% in Madhya Pradesh, 5.4% in Rajasthan, 2.5% in Kerala and 0.3% in Lakshadweep.
Most names added in UP
The Commission said that along with removing the names, the Election Commission has also added 2 crore new names to the voter list. in which Uttar Pradesh Is in first place with 92.4 lakh new voters. After UP, 35 lakh new names were included in Tamil Nadu, 20.4 lakh in Kerala and 15.4 lakh in Rajasthan. 12.9 lakh voters in Madhya Pradesh and more than 12 lakh voters in Gujarat registered themselves through Form 6 and Form 8, which has increased the participation of youth in the list.
