Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s convoy was allegedly blocked and a member of his security team assaulted in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Friday evening while he was on his way to an election campaign event, police said.

According to police, the incident occurred near the Chellithode bridge at Thiruvali in Wandoor at around 7.30 pm. Tharoor was travelling to attend an election campaign event of Congress leader A P Anilkumar when the convoy was stopped near the bridge.

Police said the accused, who were travelling in two vehicles, blocked the MP’s vehicle. When the gunman attempted to clear the obstruction, he and the driver were allegedly attacked, the FIR said.

News18 also reported that in Kerala’s election discoursesocial media has become central to shaping political narratives and voter perception, from WhatsApp forwards to AI-generated videos, even before campaigns reach the ground.

During the incident, Tharoor’s gunman and driver were allegedly attacked by a five-member group, officials said.

Police said the road was narrow, and the gunman had asked the vehicle ahead to move forward to allow the MP’s convoy to pass smoothly.

A case has been registered at Wandoor Police Station based on a complaint filed by Tharoor’s gunman Ratheesh K P, police added.

Kerala will vote in a single phase on April 9. The votes will be counted on May 4.
