Fuel prices have risen dramatically all across the globe, with petrol now costing a whopping PKR 458 in Pakistan. As the common people suffer, former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has called on citizens to support the government, stressing the importance of national unity during the global energy crisis.
Petrol prices in Pakistan have risen significantly, adding pressure on households and businesses already grappling with inflation. The increase reflects global oil market volatility, driven by geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions.
Speaking in a video message amid the situation, Afridi said: “Assalamualaikum friends, I am Shahid Afridi. Because of the war, the global energy crisis that the world is facing right now-Pakistan, Alhamdulillah, is still in a much better position than many countries. Supporting the government and backing them is the most important thing. As Pakistanis, we should try to follow the steps that the government has taken so that there is no obstacle in the progress of the country.”
Pakistan government has increased petrol by 137 rupees, taking it to 458 PKR per liter, and diesel by 184 rupees, raising it to 520 PKR per liter.

Afridi’s message focuses on collective responsibility, urging citizens to remain patient and cooperative with government measures. His appeal highlights the role of public solidarity in navigating economic challenges, particularly at a time when energy costs are straining economies worldwide.
The new prices mark an increase of 42.7 percent in petrol prices and 54.9 percent in the price of diesel.
“The decision made today is that as per international markets, after the increase in the petrol prices the new price will be 458.40 rupees ($1.64 per litre) which will be effective from tomorrow (Friday),” said the minister, Ali Pervaiz Malik.
While Afridi’s statement has drawn support from some who see his words as patriotic encouragement, others have expressed frustration, arguing that rising fuel costs are worsening everyday struggles. The debate highlights the tension between national resilience and the significant impact of the situation on common people.
