With the weather system intensifying over the Bay of Bengal and concerns about heavy rainfall, many parents and students in Chennai are unsure whether schools will remain open today. The uncertainty grew after Puducherry declared a school holiday due to weather concerns, prompting Chennai families to seek clarity. For now, parents and students are advised to stay in touch with their respective school authorities for official updates.

Here’s the current status:

At present, the Tamil Nadu government has not declared a holiday for all schools in Chennai. The district administration typically makes decisions regarding school closures based on IMD advisories, rainfall severity in specific areas, and local conditions such as waterlogging and safety risks.

Although several coastal districts like Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and certain parts of Chengalpattu have received heavy rainfall, Chennai has only seen light to moderate showers. Students and parents should note that any decision to shut schools in Chennai will likely be taken only if the weather situation deteriorates significantly.

Cyclone Ditwah has already weakened into a deep depression and is expected to settle over the southwest Bay of Bengal, around 20 km off the North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts by Monday morning, according to the IMD.

The system is currently positioned nearly 90 km southeast of Cuddalore, 130 km northeast of Karaikal, 90 km southeast of Puducherry, 180 km northeast of Vedaranyam and approximately 140 km southeast of Chennai.

For now, Chennai schools continue to remain open, though state officials are keeping a close watch on evolving weather patterns linked to the weakened cyclone.

Meanwhile, Puducherry has declared today, December 1, a holiday for all schools as a precautionary measure due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall. Home and Education Minister A Namassivayam announced that private and government-aided schools across all four regions of the Union Territory will stay closed. He added that the administration is actively monitoring rainfall conditions and has taken necessary steps to ensure public safety.
