According to the marking scheme used in the mains exam, candidates are awarded one mark for each correct answer. A penalty of 0.25 marks is applied for every incorrect answer. No marks are deducted for questions that are left unanswered.

Candidates who qualify in the mains examination will have to appear for the Language Proficiency Test (LPT). This test checks whether the candidate can read, write and understand the local language of the state or union territory they have applied for.
