Rohtak SP Removed In First Action Amid Probe In Haryana IPS Officer Suicide Case

Haryana government removed the Rohtak SP after an IPS officer was found dead with a gunshot wound on October 7, intensifying scrutiny of the incident.

In the first official action following the suicide of an IPS officer, the Haryana government on Saturday removed the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Rohtak from his post.

The development comes amid growing scrutiny over the circumstances surrounding senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar’s death. The officer’s body was found lying on a sofa inside the soundproof room, with a gunshot wound on the right side of his head, on October 7. A pistol and an empty cartridge were recovered nearby.

Meanwhile, the First Information Report (FIR) registered in the death by suicide of Kumar has revealed the initial sequence of events in the matter. According to the FIR, the officer reportedly shot himself at point-blank range, and a firearm was recovered from the scene.

As per the FIR, a local MLA from Bathinda, Amit Ratan, was already present at the location when police arrived. The FIR states that the police control room was alerted about the incident around 1:40 pm, following which investigation teams reached the spot.

The MLA, along with a senior police officer, went to the basement and found the body of the IPS officer, the FIR reveals.

During the inspection, investigators found a handwritten declaration dated October 6 and a final note dated October 7, in which the officer detailed prolonged mental harassment. Both documents have been seized and sent for legal examination.

Over a dozen top officers have been named in the FIR: Former DGPs, former Chief Secretaries, current SP Rohtak, and current DGP of Haryana.

The officer’s wife, Amneet P Kumar, an IAS officer, was in Chandigarh on official duty at the time of the incident.

The names in the note found by the police and the complaint given by the wife of Puran include Shatrujit Kapoor (IPS, DGP Haryana), Sanjay Kumar (ADGP), Pankaj Nain (IGP), K. Ramachandran (IPS), Sandeep Khirwar (IPS), Sibash Kaviraj (IPS), Manoj Yadav (former DGP, IPS), P.K. Agarwal (former DGP, IPS), T.V.S.N. Prasad (IAS), Amitabh Dhillon (ADGP), Narendra Bijarniya, SP Rohtak, and Sanjay Kumar IPS.
