Tottenham Hotspur FC on Tuesday (March 31) confirmed Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment as the men’s manager, effective immediately. De Zerbi has reportedly signed a lucrative five-year contract at the North London club, making him one of the highest-paid managers in the Premier League.
The Italian’s task can be considered at par with walking into a house on fire, one error away from destruction. One of the biggest clubs in the world in terms of wages and history, Spurs are one point off the relegation zone with seven matches to go. Injuries have played a major role in them getting here, and De Zerbi, the third manager for the season after Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor, will have to deal with them too.
“I am delighted to be joining this fantastic football club, which is one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world,” De Zerbi said in a statement released by Spurs.
“In all my discussions with the Club’s leadership, their ambition for the future has been clear – to build a team capable of reaching great achievements, and to do that playing a style of football that excites and inspires our supporters. I am here because I believe in that ambition and have signed a long-term contract to give everything to deliver it.
“Our short-term priority is to climb the Premier League table, which will be the complete focus until the final whistle of the last game of the season. I’m looking forward to getting out on the training pitch and working with these players to achieve that,” he added.
According to the BBCDe Zerbi is open to the challenge of coaching Spurs in the Championship, if it comes to it, and no clause in his contract would allow him to leave if they are relegated.
A relegation battle with a young, heavily-injured squad that has often seemed lacking in motivation is not the former Brighton and Marseille coach’s only issue, either.
Key Spurs fan organizations, including Women of the Lane, Proud Lilywhites (LGBTQI+ group), and Spurs Reach, have expressed strong opposition to his appointment, citing concerns over De Zerbi’s public support for domestic abuse accused Mason Greenwood. De Zerbi, famous for falling out with his employers, would have to repair the club both from inside and outside, his most monumental task yet.
