Rahul Gandhi on Thursday accused the BJP of fuelling communal tensions in the Uttam Nagar incident and appealed to residents of Delhi not to fall prey to what he described as “deliberate provocation.”
In a post on X, the Congress leader said the people of Uttam Nagar had paid a heavy price for the violence, pointing to the death of a young man, Tarun, and the alleged harassment faced by another family.
“Bloodshed is what only the BJP and its ecosystem desire, which seizes every opportunity to bake the bread of violence on the griddle of hate,” said Gandhi.
Gandhi further alleged that the ruling party was seeking to divert public attention from larger national issues, including the India-US trade deal, by creating conditions of Hindu-Muslim discord.
He claimed that communal unrest was being encouraged to prevent scrutiny of what he described as the government’s “handover” of India’s defence, energy and food security, as well as strategic sovereignty, to the United States.
“Riot-like conditions are once again being created in the nation’s capital in broad daylight,” Gandhi said, urging people to resist divisive politics.
He called on Delhi’s residents to uphold unity, brotherhood and peace, stressing that social harmony was the country’s greatest strength.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has listed two petitions seeking enhanced police deployment and security arrangements in Uttam Nagar ahead of Eid, amid fears of further unrest following the recent clashes.
The pleas, including a public interest litigation, have urged authorities to take preventive steps to maintain law and order during the festival period.
One of the petitioners told the court that representations had already been submitted to the Delhi Police seeking precautionary measures, but no action had been taken. Both matters are scheduled to be heard later on Thursday.
According to police, the violence broke out on March 4 after an argument reportedly erupted over a balloon during Holi celebrations in Uttam Nagar. The dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Tarun was allegedly assaulted by a Muslim mob and later succumbed to his injuries.
