Iran’s Araghchi says a regional ceasefire including Lebanon would hasten Netanyahu jailing, warns US against letting Israel kill diplomacy as Netanyahu corruption trial resumes.
Netanyahu is the first sitting Israeli prime minister to be charged with a crime.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Thursday hit out at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the resumption of his corruption trial on Sunday, saying that a region-wide ceasefire, including the one about to happen with Lebanon, would hasten his “jailing”.
In a post on X, Araghchi suggested that the Israeli leader has an ulterior motive for continuing the fighting.

The Iranian minister further said that it would be “dumb” for the United States to allow Israel to jeopardise the regional ceasefire by continuing its intense attacks on Lebanon, which have killed hundreds of people since the truce came into effect.
“If the U S. wishes to crater its economy by letting Netanyahu kill diplomacy, that would ultimately be its choice. We think that would be dumb but are prepared for it,” he added.
Netanyahu’s long-running corruption trial is set to resume on Sunday after the country lifted a state of emergency imposed during its recent conflict with Iran.
The court confirmed that hearings will return to a regular schedule, marking the latest step in a legal process that has stretched over several years. Netanyahu’s legal proceedings have frequently been deferred, citing his responsibilities as Prime Minister alongside broader national security concerns.
Netanyahu is the first sitting Israeli Prime Minister to be charged with a crime. He faces charges in three separate cases involving allegations of fraud, breach of trust, and accepting bribes. Netanyahu has consistently denied all accusations and pleaded not guilty.
Adding to the political complexity, Netanyahu last year formally sought a presidential pardon from Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
