Tiger Woods was arrested and charged with driving under the influence following a car crash near his home in Florida on Friday, according to local authorities.
The 50-year-old golf legend was involved in a rollover accident on Jupiter Island when his vehicle clipped a truck while attempting to overtake on a residential road. The impact caused his car to flip and slide a considerable distance before coming to a stop. Neither Woods nor the other driver was injured.
Driving Under Influence
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek confirmed that Tiger Woods showed signs of impairment at the scene. Although he passed a breathalyser test, he was later charged after refusing to undergo a urine analysis. “When it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused, and so he’s been charged with DUI, with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test in the crash,” Budensiek said.
Officials added that drug recognition experts believed Woods may have been under the influence of “some kind of medication or drug,” though no definitive conclusion can be drawn. “We will never get definitive results as to what he was impaired on at the time of the crash,” Budensiek stated, noting that Florida law allows individuals to refuse such tests.
Authorities described the incident as potentially far more serious. “This is a small two-lane road,” Budensiek said. “Had somebody been moving in the opposite direction, we would not be having a conversation saying there was no injuries,” he added.
Asked to estimate how fast Woods had been driving in the moments before the crash, Budensiek said: “The answer is I can’t. But I can tell you this — it’s a 30 mile an hour speed limit.”
Woods’ History Of Crashes
The development comes years after Woods survived a near-fatal crash in California in 2021, which left him with severe leg injuries and required multiple surgeries.
