Indian Railways has announced an increase in fares for long distance travel. This new fare will be applicable from 26 December 2025. Passengers traveling more than 215 kilometers will now have to pay extra 1 to 2 paise for every kilometer.
Railways estimates that this change will earn it an additional income of Rs 600 crore annually. However, there has been no change in the fares for those traveling a distance of less than 215 kilometers and monthly season ticket holders.

How much will the fare increase in which class?
- There will be no increase in fare for people with local train and monthly season tickets (MST).
- No increase in ordinary class up to 215 km.
- For journeys more than 215 km, there will be an increase of 1 paisa per km in ordinary class.
- Increase of 2 paise per km in non-AC trains of Mail/Express.
- AC class will also increase by 2 paise per km.
- Due to this, Railways will get extra Rs 600 crore this year.
- Example: If someone travels 500 km in non-AC, he will have to pay only Rs 10 extra.
- The distance from Bhopal to Delhi is 800 kilometers, so AC travel will cost Rs 16 extra.
Relief for short route and season ticket holders
Railways has given relief to crores of passengers traveling on short routes. There has been no increase in fares for journeys less than 215 kilometres. This means that short distance travel will remain as affordable as before.
Apart from this, there is news of relief for the passengers traveling daily. Railways has not made any change in the prices of sub-urban trains and Monthly Season Tickets (MST). This will not put any burden on lakhs of passengers traveling by local trains in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.
Why did Railways need to increase fares?
According to Railway Ministry sources, this fare increase is necessary to fund the increasing operational cost and infrastructure development projects. Railways is constantly working on improving its services, running new trains and modernizing stations.
The additional income of Rs 600 crore received from this fare increase will be used for these purposes. It is the second largest employer in the country and it costs heavily to maintain its network.
