Quacquarelli Symonds released the QS World University Rankings by Subject today, March 25. As many as five IITs have secured places in the top 100. IIT Delhi is ranked 36 in the Engineering and Technology category, while IIT Bombay holds the 42nd spot. IIT Madras is ranked 62, IIT Kharagpur 64, and IIT Kanpur 84.
The 55 subjects are broadly divided into four categories: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Science, and Natural Sciences. According to the QS website, this is the “biggest” ranking yet, covering more than 21,000 academic programmes from over 1,900 institutions across 100 higher education systems.
The rankings further state that India has doubled its top 50 positions since 2024, now holding 27 such places across 12 institutions.
How Other Countries Fared In The QS Rankings By Subject?
The US continues to dominate globally, leading with 37 number-one subjects and 88 top-three placements. Institutions such as Harvard, MIT and Juilliard underpin this leadership, setting standards across a broad spectrum of disciplines.
Singapore achieves 42 entries in the global top 10 and now holds the third-highest number of top 10 positions worldwide, according to the Rankings.
Since 2021, China has doubled its tally of top 10 entries and now leads the world in Classics and Ancient History, with Fudan University ranked 2nd and Peking University at rank 3.
In the UK, 40 per cent of entries improved their position, a performance that is joint third-best globally. The country secured 15 first-place rankings and 63 top-three finishes.
In Canada, the University of British Columbia recorded the highest number of subject entries of any institution worldwide, while McGill University regained its status as the country’s top-ranked university, placing 2nd globally in Mineral and Mining Engineering.
In Europe, Switzerland stands out with 12 top-five subject positions. ETH Zurich leads the way with three number-one rankings, further cementing the country’s reputation for academic excellence. In Germany, Universität Heidelberg achieves the nation’s highest subject position, ranking 8th in Classics and Ancient History, while Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin has been recognised as the world’s most improved institution in Medicine.
According to QS Senior Vice President Ben Sowter, traditional powerhouses in the US, UK and parts of Europe still dominate many disciplines, but dynamic education systems in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America are steadily gaining ground and reshaping the landscape of global excellence.
