Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an official visit to Cyprus, spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday following the tragic bridge collapse over the Indrayani River near Talegaon-Indori in Pune district.
The Prime Minister was briefed on the rescue and relief operations underway and assured all possible support to the state government.
The incident occurred earlier on Saturday when a portion of the bridge collapsed, causing multiple vehicles and commuters to plunge into the river.
2 Dead, 32 Injured
Two people have been confirmed dead, while 32 others sustained injuries in the mishap, said officials, adding that local authorities, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are carrying out emergency rescue operations.
The bridge is situated in the Kundamala area, which has seen heavy rainfall in recent days. However, police officials confirmed that there was no rain at the time of the collapse.
The bridge collapsed around 2 PM while tourists were enjoying their weekend at the site. Upon receiving reports of the incident, local police, villagers, and disaster response teams rushed to the scene and launched rescue operations.
Meanwhile, CM Fadnavis, citing initial reports, confirmed that the tragic incident claimed lives of two people. Some people were trapped while others were swept away, he added.
“Deeply saddened to learn about the tragic incident of a bridge collapse over the Indrayani River near Talegaon, Indori in Pune district. As per information received till now, 2 persons have lost their lives. My deepest condolences to their families. We share their grief in this difficult time. We stand with the bereaved families,” he said in an X post.
He also said he was in touch with the Divisional Commissioner, District Collector, CP and Tehsildar. “Some people got swept away, so a search operation is underway on a war footing to find them. NDRF teams are already deployed on-site, and all concerned agencies have been directed to remain on high alert,” he said.
