Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron on conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.

In a post on X, PM Modi said both leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the India-France strategic partnership.

“Had a very good conversation with my friend President Macron. Exchanged views on efforts for peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine and in West Asia. Reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthen the India-France strategic partnership,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Macron said they “coordinated our positions on the war in Ukraine to move toward a just and lasting peace, with strong guarantees for Ukraine and the security of Europe.”

“Regarding trade issues, we agreed to strengthen our economic exchanges and our strategic partnership in all areas, which is the key to our sovereignty and independence. Following the Summit for Action on AI held in Paris last February, we are working toward the success of the Summit on Artificial Intelligence to be held in New Delhi in 2026. For a more effective multilateralism, we agreed to closely coordinate in view of the French presidency of the G7 and the Indian presidency of the BRICS in 2026,” he added.

Macron attended the meeting at the White House earlier this week, where several European Union leaders were present along with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the European Union and NATO travelled to Washington to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine and push for strong security guarantees for the country in any post-war settlement with Russia. The Monday meeting came after Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

At the meeting, Macron proposed a future four-way meeting about Ukraine that would include Europe. He said the idea of a trilateral meeting – involving the United States, Russia and Ukraine – is “very important, because this is the only way to fix it”, but suggested Europe should also be involved, without specifying who should speak for Europe.

Following the Alaska summit, Putin held a telephone call with PM Modi and shared his assessment of his meeting with Trump.

While thanking President Putin, the Prime Minister underlined India’s consistent position for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue. He reiterated that India supports all efforts in this regard.
