Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with US President Donald Trump to discuss ongoing trade negotiations and congratulate him on the successful Gaza peace deal.

Sharing the details of their conversation on X, PM Modi said both leaders reviewed progress on bilateral trade talks and agreed to remain in close contact in the coming weeks.

“Spoke to my friend, President Trump and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan. Also reviewed the good progress achieved in trade negotiations. Agreed to stay in close touch over the coming weeks,” Prime Minister Modi wrote.

This marks the second phone call between the two leaders in less than a month. The first was on September 17, when Trump called PM Modi to wish him on his birthday.

PM Modi was among several world leaders who welcomed the ceasefire announcement, calling it a positive step towards peace in the region. The deal could mark the beginning of the end of the war in Gaza, which began in October 2023.

The also conversation comes a day after Trump announced a major ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Israel and Hamas. The deal, described by many as a breakthrough, includes the release of Israeli hostages, the return of Palestinian prisoners, large-scale humanitarian aid to Gaza, and a phased military withdrawal by Israel.

Meanwhile, Trump is expected to visit Jerusalem on Sunday, with his arrival likely to coincide with the start of the ceasefire and the first phase of hostage releases.

The peace deal is based on Trump’s 20-point proposal, which includes disarming Hamas and establishing a transitional governing authority in Gaza. While these broader goals have not yet been finalised, the current agreement is being seen as a significant step forward.
