Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reached the European country Austria directly after finishing his visit to Russia, was given a grand welcome here too. The Prime Minister was welcomed with a red carpet in the European country. Austria’s Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg himself reached the airport to receive PM Modi.

After welcoming PM Modi, Alexander Schallenberg tweeted, ‘Hearty welcome to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his historic visit to Austria. It is the 75th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. The partnership between our countries is based on a joint commitment to global security, stability and prosperity.’

Welcomed with Vande Mataram

From the airport, PM Modi reached the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Vienna, the capital of Austria. Here, he was greeted by the NRIs. On reaching the hotel, Austrian artists welcomed Prime Minister Modi with Vande Mataram.

Chancellor Karl Nehammer met PM Modi on his arrival in Austria. He posted a selfie with PM Modi and said, ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi, welcome to Vienna. It is a pleasure and honour to welcome you to Austria. Austria and India are friends and partners. I am looking forward to our political and economic discussions during your visit!’

‘… this friendship will become stronger’

PM Modi retweeted Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s tweet and said, ‘Chancellor Karl Nehammer, it was a pleasure to meet you in Vienna. India-Austria friendship is strong and it will become even stronger in the times to come. Thank you for your warm welcome. I look forward to our discussions. Our countries will continue to work together for global good.’

Indira Gandhi went to Austria in 1983

This is after 41 years, when an Indian Prime Minister has visited Austria. The last visit before this was in 1983. Then Indira Gandhi had visited Austria as the Indian PM. Indira Gandhi first visited Austria in 1971 as the Prime Minister. After this, the then Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky visited India in 1980. After this, Indira Gandhi once again visited Austria in 1983, following which the then Chancellor of Austria Fred Sinowatz visited India in 1984.

Nehru made his first visit to Austria

If we talk about the first Prime Minister to visit Austria, then after the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1949, Jawaharlal Nehru visited Austria as PM in 1955. There are frequent visits between India and Austria at the level of leaders, ministers and MPs, but this is the third visit at the Prime Minister level from India.
