Olympic gold medallist and a certified legend of the game, Carolina Marin, pulled the curtains down on her illustrious career on Thursday as a persistent knee injury forced the Spanish ace’s curtain-call.
“My journey in professional badminton has come to an end and therefore I will not be competing in the European Championships in Huelva,” Marin said in an emotional post she shared.
Marin proved to be a constant thorn in the path of ace Indian shuttlers as she gave her counterparts a run for their money each time she was drawn up against them.
Famously, Marin broke Indian hearts during the 2016 Rio Olympics in which she got the better of PV Sindhu in the summit clash to deny the Indian star the yellow-metal.
Marin’s record against Sindhu serves as a testament to the fierce and competitive nature of the Spanish shuttler as she has won twice as many fixtures against the sensational Sindhu with a 12-6 record record working in her favour.
The duels between the two have been intense each time they stand across each other on the court, but Marin, who has made life difficult for the star Indian badminton ace, is still held in high regard in the sport-loving peninsular nation.
Sindhu’s defeat to Marin in the final of the Olympics, which shattered a billion golden Indian dreams, remains a sour spot, but the Spaniard’s class and grace have held her up in high stead irrespective of preferences and favouritism.
Sindhu wasn’t the only one who tried to stand up to the challenge posed by the Spaniard as veteran Saina Nehwal also had her share of memorable encounters with Marin.
Nehwal, in fact, started off the better in the rivalry winning a swathe of her initial encounters against the Spanish star, before being pegged back as the careers of the duo went on.
Marin clawed her way back to register a 7-6 head-to-head record against Nehwal thanks to her victories over the Indian stalwart towards the end of her career.
But, despite her accomplishments against players that represent the tricolour, Marin is still looked up to as an icon in the world of badminton, as the Indian stars and fans paid tribute to he glorious career, which she had to cut short with long-term health in mind.
