Amid the Iran-America war, the impact of the shortage of commercial LPG cylinders in India is now visible on the food industry as well. Restaurants and cloud kitchens in many cities are struggling with gas shortage. Due to this, orders on food delivery platforms like Swiggy and Zomato are decreasing.

Gig workers say that now the daily orders have reduced from 30 to just 5-10, because the menu in restaurants has become very small or the restaurants have closed. High gas consuming foods like roti, dosa, and puri have been removed from the menu. That’s why people are not able to order the food of their choice.

Gig and Platform Service Workers Union says that 50-60% of food delivery orders on platforms like Zomato and Swiggy are getting cancelled.

The earnings of gig workers have declined.

Crisis reaches corporate canteen

Due to the gas crisis, canteen services at many campuses of IT company Infosys have been affected. The company has advised employees to bring food from home for the time being, as only a limited menu will be available in the canteen. Also, in the email sent to the employees, it has been told that some food will be brought from the external central kitchen and many food items cooked on gas will not be available.
