The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has reportedly issued legal notices to several unauthorised companies allegedly selling Tirupati Laddus. Numerous online platforms, some US-based, including the owner of PushMyCart, have received notices.
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the governing body of the Tirumala temple, has initiated legal action against various unauthorised parties allegedly involved in selling or marketing products using the name ‘Tirupati Laddu’.
TTD reportedly said that this practice infringes upon the Geographical Indication (GI) rights exclusively granted to the temple’s original laddu offering.
According to a report by the Indian Express, the legal notice has also been sent to Pushmycart, a marketplace e-commerce site based in the US, over the unauthorised sale of laddu.
“Unauthorised use of the registered GI, coupled with the false association created through your product description and social media content reflects a calculated and dishonest intent to infringe upon TTD’s rights over the Tirupati Laddu,” read the notice, as quoted by the Indian Express.
The notice highlights that the commercial sale of laddu prasadam by any third party is “illegal”, also noting that it could have been obtained from the devotees who got it from the temple.
“The preparation of the laddu is done exclusively within the Tirumala temple under the supervision of TTD, following a time-honoured and sanctified process. Unauthorized use and sale of the name not only infringes legal rights but also undermines the spiritual sanctity of the offering,” TTD said.
Meanwhile, PushMyCart also acknowledged the receipt of legal notice, as per a report by the Indian Express.
