Now in India, customers may have to pay more for buying old iPhones. Apple has decided to stop providing demand generation (DG) support or incentives to retailers on older models like iPhone 15 and 16, due to which the prices may increase by about Rs 5,000.
According to market experts of Moneycontrol, this decision may be implemented this week. Recently, cashback offers were reduced from Rs 6,000 to Rs 1,000, due to which the iPhone 17 series became expensive and now the prices of older models will also increase.
What is demand generation support?
According to market sources, demand generation or DG support is an incentive that brands give to retailers and channel partners, through which they increase demand by giving discounts to customers.
Even without changing the MRP, phones became cheaper with this support. Now due to the stop of support, retailers will not be able to give discounts like before and the final bill of customers will increase.
Last chance to buy cheap today
- According to retailers, today may be the last day to buy iPhone at the old rate.
- After support is removed, customers will have to pay around Rs 5,000 more for the same phone.
- This will be difficult for those who were waiting for the price to drop after the new launch.
No impact on the price of iPhone 17 series
According to sources, the removal of DG support is only for older models and there will be no change in the prices of the iPhone 17 lineup.
According to experts, Apple did not increase the MRP of its flagship series, while other companies have increased the prices.
Other Android phones including Samsung-Vivo also expensive
Not only Apple, brands like Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Xiaomi, Motorola and Nothing have increased prices since November. Many models have become expensive in March also.
According to companies, input costs have increased due to memory and storage becoming expensive. To maintain profits, many companies have cut sales targets by up to 20%.
Why are phone prices increasing?
Component Cost: Increase in chipset and storage prices.
Incentive Cut: Apple withdrew retail discount funds.
Currency Value: The cost increased due to the weakness of the rupee against the dollar.
According to experts, even though prices are increasing, most iPhones in India are purchased on EMI. The increase of ₹ 5,000 will not have a major impact on monthly EMIs, so there is less chance of a huge decline in demand.
Challenges of smartphone market in 2026
According to International Data Corporation (IDC), 2026 will be full of ups and downs for the Indian smartphone sector. Supply chain issues, rupee volatility and rising component prices will add to the pressure.
It is estimated that total smartphone shipments may decline by 12-15% this year, while Apple’s portfolio is expected to grow by 5-6%.
