Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday blew the electoral bugle in West Bengal’s Malda as he announced that it was time for the state to bring the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to power in the upcoming elections.
“In every corner of Bengal, there is a government of good governance under the BJP. Now it’s Bengal’s turn for good governance. That’s why, after the victory in the Bihar elections, I said that with the blessings of Ma Ganga, the river of development will now flow in Bengal as well, and the BJP will make this happen…” he said.
The prime minister added: “Yesterday, you saw in Maharashtra that BJP got a historic win. Some days back in Kerala too, we got a BJP mayor. This shows the country’s Gen Z has full faith in BJP. I can see your energy, and I can say this time Bengal will give vote to BJP.”
Stepping up the campaign rhetoric, the prime minister engaged the audience in a call-and-response chant. “When I say ‘paltano dorkar’ (there must be change),” he told the crowd, urging them to answer with “chai BJP sarkar” (we want a BJP government).
Training guns on the Trinamool Congress government, PM Modi said: “There is no factory in Bengal. Farmers are not getting any benefit. They have not given you your rightful share.”
The prime minister said he wanted “every poor household in Bengal to have its own permanent home” and that those entitled should receive “free ration” and the full benefits of welfare schemes run by the Centre. However, he said the benefits were not reaching people due to corruption at the state level.
“The money that the Centre sends for the poor is being looted by TMC leaders,” he said, adding that the Mamata Banerjee government had become “an enemy of mine and the people of Bengal”.
He added: “Bengal is the only state where Ayushman Bharat is not allowed. TMC people do not let poor people get help from my scheme,” he said, emphasising that it was time to “say goodbye to this kind of cruel government”.
On the issue of infiltration in the state, which has become a political hot potato, the prime minister said it was important to drive them out. Without naming America, PM Modi said even developed countries are driving out illegal immigrants from their own countries.
Terming it “Modi’s guarantee”, he assured Bengal’s Matua residents that the Constitution will continue to protect them.
