WWE Superstar Gunther opened up on the ‘USA vs Foreigner’ angle that the Stamford-based company tried to push through him during his days as a break-out star, and revealed his dislike of such stereotypical angles and storylines that limit a character’s work and development.
The wrestler from Austria was initially pitched as the ‘big, bad guy from overseas’, but the 38-year-old got rid of it as soon as he possibly could.
Gunther also added that the WWE sought to force iconography of Austria through designs based on the nation’s flag, but Gunther did away with it when he got the first chance to do so.
“No, I’m not a ‘Foreign Menace.’ I always get a little bit annoyed, because when they go like, ‘Oh, he’s just a bad foreigner,’ I try to avoid everything that has to do with a flag or something,” he said.
“I mean, they put it on my trunks when I started out, you know, they really wanted to have the flag on my whatever. I got rid of it as soon as I could,” the wrestler revealed.
The patriot vs the overseas menace is an angle the WWE has exploited to good returns over the years, but Gunther touched up on the antiquated angle the storyline projects and how the same might no yield results in modern times as they did a couple of decades ago.
“Sometimes it still sticks, that whole like foreigner thing, but then on the other hand, it’s very stereotypical, and I think it was a little like, more accurate in the 80s,”
Some of the famous overseas menace characters from the WWE include the legendary Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, Ivan Koloff, Yokozuna, Bret ‘The Hitman’ Heart, Eddie Gurrero, Haku, Hakushi, Steven Regal, Lance Storm, Antonio Cesaro, Jacques Rougeau, Finlay and The Great Khali to name a few.
