The Supreme Court is preparing to remove the team that prepared the sub-chapter named ‘Corruption in the Judiciary’ in the NCERT’s Class 8 Social Science book.
The court has directed the Central Government, all State Governments and Public Funded Institutions to remove Professor Michelle Denino, Chairperson of Social Science Curriculum of NCERT, from the curriculum.
Also, his two other associate members Diwakar and Alok Prasanna Kumar should also not be included in the process of preparing the syllabus in any way. Apart from this, all three should also be excluded from the process of finalizing the next generation textbooks.
Professor Michel Denino, along with his two colleagues – Diwakar and Alok Prasanna Kumar, had prepared the sub-chapter ‘Corruption in Judiciary’ in Part-2 of the NCERT Social Science book of class 8.
Also prevented from serving in public funded institution
The bench led by Chief Justice of India i.e. CJI Surya Kant, Prof. Michel Denino and his team have been instructed to be removed from the process of preparation of this chapter and its inclusion in the curriculum. He has also been directed to stop him from serving in any such public funded institution.
Deliberate attempt to create a negative image of the Judiciary
The court said that prima facie there is no reason to believe that Professors Michel Denino, Diwakar and Alok Prasanna Kumar do not have knowledge about the Indian judiciary. It can also be assumed that he deliberately presented the facts in such a way that it creates a negative image of the judiciary before the students of Class 8.
The court said that the students of class 8 are young and they can be affected by such things. Therefore, it is incomprehensible why such people should be included in creating the curriculum or preparing the next generation books.
NCERT apologized unconditionally to the court
Earlier on Tuesday, March 10, NCERT had tendered an unconditional apology regarding the ‘Corruption in Judiciary’ chapter of the book. There was controversy regarding this chapter. After this the sale of the book was banned. The matter had reached the Supreme Court. CJI Surya Kant had said that the judiciary cannot be allowed to be defamed.
Ban on sale of book after Supreme Court’s displeasure
On February 25, following the displeasure of the Supreme Court, the sale of NCERT book containing the chapter ‘Corruption in Judiciary’ was banned. NCERT sources had confirmed this. According to sources, NCERT called an internal meeting of the experts who suggested the chapter and the officials who approved it. The book has also been removed from the website.
