On the occasion of National Education Day 2024, let’s take a look at the last five education ministers of the country and their educational qualifications

National Education Day is celebrated on November 11 every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Union Education Minister of independent India. An eminent educationist and journalist, Azad was home-schooled. He was also trained in several subjects such as mathematics, philosophy, world history, and science as well as could speak in Arabic, Bengali, Persian, and English.
In 1912, Azad began publishing a weekly Urdu newspaper in Calcutta called the Al-Hilal (The Crescent). He also played a great role in the establishment of the University Grant Commission (UGC). He is also responsible for building the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Later, he established several institutions such as the Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi.
On the occasion of National Education Day 2024, let’s take a look at the last five education ministers of the country and their educational qualifications:
Mallipudi Mangapati Pallam Raju: The 27th Union Minister for Human Resources Development (HRD) in the Central Government, he worked during the tenure of former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s government in 2012. He completed his schooling at the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet (HPS), in 1979 and BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in 1983. He also studied MBA from the Fox School of Business and Management at Temple University, Philadelphia, USA, in 1985.
Smriti Irani: The 28th education minister of the country, Irani studied at the Holy Child Auxilium School, New Delhi. She later enrolled at the School of Open Learning at the University of Delhi. After controversies over her education floated in 2019, she revealed that she had written her first-year B.Com exams from that institution but had not completed the three-year degree course.
Prakash Javadekar: The 29th education minister of India, he completed his BCom (Hons) from the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). Javadekar was appointed as the Human Resource and Development Minister of India on July 5, 2016, and held the post until May 30, 2019.
Ramesh Pokhriyal: The 30th education minister of the country, he joined the ministry as HRD Minister and resigned as an Education Minister. The name of the ministry was changed during his tenure. Born in Uttarakhand’s Pinani village, he received an MA degree from the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University. It was during his tenure as Education Minister that the National Education Policy (NEP) was launched. The policy was being drafted much before his appointment. NEP 2020 was launched jointly by Pokhriyal, Javadekar, and Irani.
Dharmendra Pradhan: The current Minister of Education as well as Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. He held the post since July 7, 2021. He was also the longest-serving Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas in India. A native of Talcher in Odisha, he holds a postgraduate degree in Anthropology from Utkal University in Bhubaneswar. He is also an alumnus of Talcher College, where he started his political journey as the president of the students’ union.
