Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with chief ministers on the ongoing conflict in West Asia to review the preparedness and plans regarding energy needs of all states and Union territories.

Modi will speak to the CMs through video conferencing on Friday evening (March 27) for the meeting, which will focus on ensuring synergy of efforts in the spirit of ‘Team India’.

This comes a day after the Centre briefed an all-party meeting on the latest developments in West Asia, calling for unity amid the war. It discussed the implications of the evolving situation, especially the looming energy crisis caused by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz – a key waterway from where a fifth of the world’s oil and gas pass through.

This meeting was chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, with participation of leaders across political parties. Union home minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were among those present.

Foreign secretary Vikram Misri made a detailed presentation on the situation in West Asia and its potential impact on India. During the discussions, Puri outlined India’s energy preparedness detailing fuel reserves and steps being taken to mitigate any disruption, while Jaishankar elaborated on India’s diplomatic position underlining New Delhi’s balanced approach in its ties with both Israel and Iran.

The central government urged all political parties to present a united front on an issue of national importance. It stressed that differing on political messaging at such a time could create unnecessary panic, and expressed confidence that both the government and opposition will act in unison to reassure the public.
