Mystery shrouds the death of a 30-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh, who was found with her throat slit inside a public toilet at Chandigarh’s Rose Garden.

According to police, the body – discovered on Saturday (November 29) – was sent for a post-mortem but the police are trying to determine if this is a murder or a homicide. During the initial assessment of the crime scene, a knife was recovered and secured as critical evidence, they said.

Police identified the woman as Diksha Thakur, who was a native of Saharanpur, and worked as a customer care executive for a private media and OTT company. She had been living in a paying guest accommodation in Mohali’s Phase 11 for four to five months, and was separated from her husband with whom she has a three-year-old son.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A report published by Hindustan Times said Diksha Thakur’s body was discovered on Saturday afternoon around 3.15 pm after some visitors to the garden heard a scream from inside the women’s washroom. They alerted the traffic police posted nearby and asked a woman to check the premises, they said.

They said the woman found Thakur motionless on the floor in a pool of blood and with a deep gash on her neck. She was faintly breathing but died within moments, even as she was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her brought dead, they added.

WHAT DO WE KNOW?

The biggest question the police are facing in this case is if it is a murder or suicide.

The forensic team recovered a four-inch kitchen knife from the crime scene. The police, however, said there was only one injury on the body and no other visible signs of resistance.

The HT report said investigators found that Thakur was on medical leave for more than a week due to anxiety and health issues. She had visited a hospital earlier that week with her brother-in-law and was prescribed anti-anxiety medication.

It said a bag containing anti-depressants was found at the crime scene. On the day she was found dead, however, she had resumed work but left early around 2 pm citing that she felt unwell and, subsequently, went to the Rose Garden instead of going home.

Female sanitation staff deployed at the toilet were reportedly absent, due to which there are no eyewitnesses in the case. Police are trying to gather as much evidence as possible from the crime scene with teams scanning CCTV footage to pinpoint her movements on the day and if she had company. They are also checking her phone records.

“At this stage, we have not found evidence of foul play. However, we are examining every possible angle, including personal, circumstantial and psychological factors. The post-mortem report and forensic analysis will be crucial in determining the exact cause of death,” senior superintendent of police Kanwardeep Kaur told HT.

Deputy superintendent of police Dalbir Singh, meanwhile, was quoted: “…we cannot say much at this point. We can elaborate after the investigation. The deceased woman has been identified. She belonged to UP…we have recovered a knife from the scene of the crime…”.
