The Forest Department of Madhya Pradesh has presented an excellent example of technology and international coordination in wildlife conservation. A 2-year-old female cinereous vulture, which was released after treatment in Bhopal Van Vihar, is now safe due to Pakistani cooperation.
This vulture was rescued in an injured condition from Susner in Shajapur on January 22 this year. It was treated at the Vulture Conservation Breeding Center (VCBC) of Van Vihar National Park.
After being declared ‘fit for release’, it was equipped with a microchip and GPS-GSM telemetry device. On March 25, it was released in Halali Dam area of Raisen, which made its real-time monitoring possible. This work was done in collaboration with WWF-India and Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS).

After the release, during surveillance, it was found that this female vulture crossed the international border via Rajasthan and reached Pakistan by 6th April. When signals were not received on April 7, WWF-India immediately contacted WWF-Pakistan.
With the cooperation of Pakistan Forest Department and WWF-Pakistan, this vulture was safely recovered from local residents in Khanewal district.
The female vulture became unable to fly due to the severe hailstorm that hit Khanewal and Multan areas on April 7 and was found on the ground.
Wildlife officials rescued it and gave it first aid. It was shifted to the local Vulture Captive Breeding Center under the supervision of WWF-Pakistan. The vulture had suffered minor injuries and is now recovering.
