Egypt’s Mo Salah entered his name in the history books on Wednesday by becoming the first footballer from Africa to score 50 goals in the UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah entered his name in the history books on Wednesday (March 18) by becoming the first footballer from Africa to score 50 goals in the UEFA Champions League. The 33-year-old forward from Egypt scored his landmark 50th goal on Wednesday during the second leg of Liverpool’s Round of 16 match against Turkish club Galatasaray.

Salah now has 50 goals to his name in 97 Champions League matches played so far for four teams – Basel, Chelsea, Roma and Liverpool.

Salah, who is one of the greatest footballers of all time, scored Liverpool’s fourth goal of the match in the second half to achieve the record feat. He had earlier missed the spot kick in the first half of the match that Liverpool won by 4-0 on Wednesday and 4-1 on aggregate to book their place in the quarterfinals against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.

In the list of African footballers with the most goals in the UEFA Champions League, Salah is followed by Didier Drogba. Drogba played 92 matches in the premier European competition and scored 42 goals for three teams – Marseille, Chelsea and Galatasaray.

Former Cameroon forward Samuel Eto’o, who played for teams like Real Madrid, Mallorca, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea in the Champions League, finished his career with 30 goals in 78 matches, and Senegal’s Sadio Mané joined Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr after scoring 27 Champions League goals in 63 matches for Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
