Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a heartfelt letter to the BJP’s newly elected Thiruvananthapuram Mayor VV Rajesh, hailing the party’s first-ever victory in a municipal corporation in Kerala as an “epoch-making” moment and a milestone “written in golden letters” in the political history of the state.
In the letter dated December 30, 2025, PM Modi congratulated Rajesh and Deputy Mayor Ashen Nath on taking oath on January 3, describing the BJP’s success in the Kerala capital as a reflection of people’s faith in the party’s vision of development and good governance.
“In the midst of the festive season and as we begin the year 2026, history was made in the great city of Thiruvananthapuram when you took oath as the Mayor of the city,” the Prime Minister wrote, adding that the occasion would “truly signify” a historic political shift.
Recalling his memories of the city, PM Modi said Thiruvananthapuram holds “a place of pride in the minds of every Malayali” and is “blessed by Sree Padmanabhaswamy”.
He noted that as the capital of Kerala, the city has nurtured “thought leaders, social reformers, artists, musicians, poets, cultural giants, saints and seers”, and said that the BJP being blessed by such a city was “very humbling”.
“Our vision to build a Vikasit Thiruvananthapuram has resonated with people across the city, from all sections of society,” the Prime Minister wrote, stating that voters had seen the work of the BJP-led government at the Centre and its efforts towards urban development in different states.
Thanking the people of the city, he said, “I thank the people of this city for the warmth.”
The Prime Minister underlined that the victory had brought “immense happiness and pride” to BJP workers in Kerala and across India.
“Powered by the blessings of the people of Thiruvananthapuram, what has happened is epoch-making. It is a milestone written in golden letters,” he said.
PM Modi also took a sharp swipe at the state’s traditional political fronts, saying Kerala’s politics had long been dominated by the LDF and UDF, whose “poor governance record is for everyone to see” and who had “perpetuated a culture of corruption and brutal violence”.
He praised BJP workers for standing firm “despite adversity, hostility and brutal violence”.
Stating that the BJP’s success in the capital signalled a larger political change, PM Modi wrote that “the people of the state, especially the youngsters and women, are ready for a new dawn”.
He said the BJP-NDA was emerging as the people’s option, rooted in “nationalism without exclusion, development without corruption and governance without appeasement”, and asserted that the “fixed match of the LDF and UDF” was nearing its end.
Invoking social reformers such as Sree Narayana Guru, Mahatma Ayyankali, and Sri Narayana Padmanabhan, the Prime Minister urged Rajesh and his team to serve the city with inspiration drawn from their ideals and work towards improving “Ease of Living” for citizens.
He concluded by wishing the new mayor and his team success in delivering governance with “humility, compassion and decisiveness”.
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s letter, Rajesh, in a post on X, mentioned that the recognition was a “New Year’s gift” to Kerala.
“This recognition is the New Year’s gift given to Kerala by the Honourable Prime Minister,” he said, adding that “the political change in Thiruvananthapuram is the result of decades of hard work by BJP workers in Kerala”.

VV Rajesh was elected mayor of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation after the party won 50 of the 101 wards, marking its first-ever victory in a municipal corporation in Kerala.
In the mayoral election, Rajesh secured 51 votes, including the support of an Independent councillor.
LDF candidate RP Sivaji received 29 votes, while UDF’s KS Sabarinathan secured 19 votes, two of which were later declared invalid.
Senior BJP leaders, including state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, were present at the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation office to witness Rajesh being elected mayor.
Union Minister Suresh Gopi and former BJP state president K Surendran were also present.
Rajesh later took the oath as mayor and said he would see all 101 wards as a single unit, seeking cooperation from all to make Thiruvananthapuram “one of the top three cities in the country in terms of development”.
