West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday distanced herself from the Malda incident that drew sharp criticism from the Supreme Court, saying law and order was no longer “in her hands” and blaming the Election Commission for failing to protect officials.
“The Chief Secretary and DGP do not contact me anymore. Since everything has been taken away from me, maintaining law and order is now your responsibility,” Banerjee said.
Her remarks came a day after the Supreme Court pulled up the state administration over the gherao of judicial officers in Malda, calling the incident “preplanned” and criticising the response of senior officials.

Mamata Blames Election Commission
Banerjee alleged that the Election Commission had “totally failed” to ensure security for judicial officers engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
“I condemn the Election Commission for failing to protect the judicial officers,” she said at a rally in Murshidabad.
She claimed that after the announcement of the Assembly elections, the poll body had deployed its own officers in key administrative and police positions, effectively taking control.
“All my powers have been taken away, I have never seen such an Election Commission,” she said.
Banerjee further alleged that the BJP was attempting to engineer a situation that could lead to cancellation of polls and imposition of President’s Rule in the state.

‘I Was Not Informed’: Mamata
The Chief Minister said she was not informed about the incident by top officials and came to know about it through the media.
“The Chief Secretary did not inform me. I learned about it from journalists. They tried to insult the state. How much more humiliation will we endure?” she said.
