The ancient city of Ayodhya is set to host its grandest Deep-rooted celebration yet, transforming its 56 ghats into a breathtaking sea of light to commemorate the victorious return of Lord Ram. The gargantuan exercise, which kicked off on Friday, also aims to set a new Guinness World Record by illuminating over 26 lakh earthen lamps along the banks of the Saryu River.
The sheer scale of the event is a testament to the community and logistical planning involved. Essential supplies have been procured on a massive scale: organisers have secured 73,000 litres of oil and 55 lakh cotton wicks to keep the myriad of diyas burning for the duration of the record attempt. The earthen lamps themselves have provided a significant economic boost to local artisans, with approximately 16 lakh diyas hand-crafted by around 40 potter families from Ayodhya and surrounding villages, with the remaining lamps supplied by various organisations across Uttar Pradesh.
At the heart of this devotional spectacle are the people. A massive team of 33,000 volunteers, primarily students and teachers from Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, has been roped in for the painstaking task of meticulously arranging the lamps across the ghats. This year’s illumination will also extend to new areas like the Laxman Kila Ghat, alongside the traditional central stage, Ram Ki Paidi.
Deepotsav is not merely a religious event; it is a cultural showcase and a major drive for spiritual tourism. The three-day event, culminating in the main lighting ceremony on October 19, will feature a majestic Maha Aarti performed by 2,100 devotees, a 3D holographic musical laser show, and a drone show featuring 1,100 “Make in India” drones. These elements are designed to narrate the epic tale of the Ramayana and capture the spirit of Treta Yuga Ayodhya, firmly establishing the city as a global spiritual destination.
