Unnao rape survivor and her mother met Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday and the latter assured the victim’s family all possible support in their fight for justice and safety.

In the meeting which took place at Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi’s residence at 10, Janpath Road in the national capital, the survivor and her family placed three requests before Rahul Gandhi, expressing concerns over their legal battle, personal security and livelihood, party sources told CNN-News18.

As per sources, the victim requested Rahul Gandhi’s help in securing a top lawyer to fight former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who has been convicted in the rape case, in the Supreme Court. Sengar has challenged his conviction and sentence in the case. He will be out of jail till court reaches a decision on his appeal. Rahul Gandhi assured the family that he would facilitate legal assistance for the case.

The victim’s family also sought help in relocating to a Congress-ruled state, citing fears for their safety and a lack of confidence in their current security arrangements. As per party sources, the Congress leader promised to help them relocate to ensure their protection.

In addition, the survivor’s husband requested support in securing a better job to support the family. Rahul Gandhi assured him that the matter would be looked into, sources added.

Congress sources further said that both Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi assured the survivor’s family that they would do everything within their capacity to ensure justice, security and dignity for the survivor and her family.

The survivor and her mother met the Congress leader following the Delhi High Court’s decision granting relief to the convict and former BJP MLA. The High Court suspended the jail term of Sengar, who is serving life imprisonment, saying he has already served seven years and five months in prison.

Imposing several conditions, the bench of Delhi High Court Justice Subramonium Prasad and Justice Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar directed Sengar to furnish a personal bond of Rs 15 lakh with three sureties of the like amount.

Earlier today, security personnel in New Delhi reportedly stopped the victim and her mother from holding a protest against the Delhi High Court’s decision and manhandled the elderly woman.

The survivor and her mother have been protesting at India Gate against the decision. Earlier on Tuesday, the duo, along with Bhayana, was detained. On Wednesday, they had planned to address the media at Mandi House. However, the CRPF-escorted bus they were travelling in allegedly did not stop at the designated location.
