A ride back home from school turned tragic after a seven-year-old boy died after falling out of a moving school. The incident took place in Bengaluru’s Magadi on Friday.
The victim, L Rajat, was a student of class 2 at SBS School. He was a resident of Hosapalya in Janata Colony. His parents, Lokesh and Radha, are both daily wage workers from Hanur in College.
The police has arrested the school bus driver, 35-year-old R. Vinod, for negligence, reported India Today.
According to police, Rajat and his sister were returning home as usual in their school bus, which picks them up from near their house and drops them off last. The bus, which typically carries around 30 children, is assigned a woman attendant to supervise the students during their journey. However, on the day of the incident, the attendant disembarked one stop before Rajat and Dushita.
“After the attendant got off, Vinod continued driving with Rajat and Dushita seated near the door. The bus door had not been properly secured. As the vehicle moved, Vinod asked Rajat to close the door. When Rajat approached it, he lost balance and was thrown out. The rear wheel of the bus tragically ran over him,” an investigating officer told India Today.
Rajat was rushed to a nearby private hospital by the driver, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Authorities noted that while cases of accidental death caused by negligence are generally bailable at the police station, this case was treated more seriously. Vinod has been booked under culpable homicide not amounting to murder, a non-bailable offence that required him to be produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial custody.
“Vinod had two key responsibilities — ensuring the bus door was locked and not asking a child to handle such a task while the vehicle was moving. He failed on both counts,” the officer added.
Vinod has since been transferred to the judicial custody of Ramanagara district prison as the investigation continues.
