World number one Jannik Sinner had his fans’ hearts in their mouths, not just with his brilliant play to overcome Felix Auger-Aliassime in the US Open semi-final, but also by leaving the court between the second and third sets with a medical timeout to receive some treatment.

Ahead of Sunday’s final against rival Carlos Alcaraz, he cannot afford any injuries, especially considering the duo’s games are always high-intensity. However, Simone Vagnozzi, one of Sinner’s coaches, has provided a positive update, saying that it doesn’t seem ‘anything serious’.

“He was slightly bothered in the abdominal area at one point, but after treatment with the physiotherapist, it went away. I don’t think it’s anything serious,” Vagnozzi told Ubitennis.

“After returning from the locker room, in the first game of the third set, he wasn’t sure how he felt and didn’t put much effort into serving. Then, he began to serve with more force, and it improved. Therefore, I think he is very calm heading into Sunday,” the Italian coach added.

Sinner beat 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 Auger-Aliassime and though he looked a bit stuttery on occasions, the match was typically dominant for the Wimbledon champion.

“It was very tough, but it’s true that sometimes you need matches like that to appreciate the journey better. We take nothing for granted. Reaching a final is incredible. It’s normal to face difficulties in a tournament like this. Jannik approaches Sunday with great confidence and playing very well. It will be a tough match against Carlos. It will be a spectacle,” Vagnozzi reflected on the semi-final.

The coach also said he expects Alcaraz to come with different tricks than Wimbledon, where he lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

“It will be an extremely difficult final, as always. I’m sure Carlos will try something different from the Wimbledon final,” Vagnozzi said. “Therefore, we need to be prepared. It will be important to have certain tactical ideas. Then, we must step onto the court calmly, ready to have fun and enjoy.”

The title clash will begin at 11:30 pm IST.
