ISRO gave information about the satellite launching by posting on X on Tuesday.

Indian Space Research Center (ISRO) is going to launch one of its important commercial missions today from Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. America’s next generation communication satellite Bluebird Block-2 will be launched at 8:54 am using the LVM3-M6 rocket.

The Bluebird Block-2 mission is part of a global LEO constellation that aims to provide connectivity directly to mobile phones via satellite. With this, 4G and 5G voice calls, video calls, messaging and data services can be made available in any part of the world. Calls can be made directly from space through any smartphone.

It has a 223 square meter phased array, making it the largest commercial communications satellite ever deployed in low Earth orbit, at an altitude of approximately 600 km. This satellite weighs about 6,100 kg. A Bluebird satellite will have an antenna of 64 square meters, or the size of half a football field.

According to ISRO, this mission is a dedicated commercial launch, which is being executed under the agreement between New Space India Limited (NSIL) and American company AST Spacemobile. NSIL is the commercial arm of ISRO.

Launch of heaviest payload from LVM3 rocket

Before the launch, ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan offered prayers at Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala on 22 December. ISRO said that this will be the heaviest payload ever sent to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by LVM3 rocket. Earlier, the heaviest payload was 4,400 kg, which was launched in GTO in November 2024.

According to the space agency, the 43.5 meter high LVM3 rocket has three stages and a cryogenic engine has been used in it. Two S200 solid boosters provide thrust to the rocket for lift-off. The satellite is expected to separate from the rocket about 15 minutes after launch.

Earlier, the heaviest LVM3-M5 communication satellite was 03, weighing about 4,400 kg, which ISRO successfully launched into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) on November 2.

American company said- target is to provide cellular broadband all over the world

AST Spacemobile has already launched Bluebird-1 to 5 satellites in September 2024. The company claims that it has partnered with more than 50 mobile operators around the world and similar satellites will be launched in future also.

There will be no need to change service providers. The company says – Our target is to provide cellular broadband all over the world. We want to provide connectivity to people even where traditional networks cannot reach. This will open up many opportunities in many fields including education, social networking, healthcare.

The company said- To use our service (direct calls from space), no one will need to change service providers (mobile network providing companies like Airtel, Vodafone). For this we are working with mobile network operators around the world.
