Yet he faces a familiar challenge in Axar Patel. The Delhi captain has dismissed Rohit three times in this format, and is expected to bowl in the powerplay again.
However, if Delhi allow Rohit and Ryan Rickelton any freedom in the powerplay, the consequences could be severe. In their opener against KKR, the pair reduced a 221-run chase to a procession with a commanding 148-run stand. With Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma waiting in reserve, any failure to strike early could see the game drift away at alarming speed.
The absence of Mitchell Starc, still sidelined with shoulder and elbow concerns, leaves a significant void in Delhi’s powerplay plans. Without the left-armer’s ability to angle the ball into right-handers, Mukesh Kumar and Lungi Ngidi must shoulder the responsibility.
Ngidi, buoyed by his superb dipping slower-ball dismissal of Nicholas Pooran in Lucknow, will carry confidence into this contest.
Delhi’s trump card, however, remains their spin trio. Kuldeep Yadav, fresh off a match-winning spell, spoke with the quiet assurance of a bowler at the peak of his craft. In a format increasingly dominated by the bat, Kuldeep continues to champion attacking wrist-spin.
“It’s very important for spinners to stick to their strength,” Kuldeep said.
“When the batters put you under pressure, you tend to lose your strength. You look for safer options to get out of that situation. But I believe it’s important to focus on my strength.
“Also, you need to understand what the batters’ strengths are… If you are an attacking spinner, don’t try and change it. That’s your identity.”
