The dominance of the two carriers continued into January 2026, with IndiGo at 63.6 per cent and Air India at 26.5 per cent, leaving smaller airlines with marginal shares.
The government has informed the Rajya Sabha that India’s domestic aviation market remains highly concentrated, with IndiGo and the Air India Group together accounting for 91 per cent of the total market share.
The data was shared in response to a question raised by Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose, with the reply provided by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, NDTV reported.
According to the Ministry, IndiGo held around 64 per cent market share in 2025, while Air India Group accounted for 27 per cent. The dominance of the two carriers continued into January 2026, with IndiGo at 63.6 per cent and Air India at 26.5 per cent, leaving smaller airlines with marginal shares.
The government also revealed that IndiGo cancelled 5,689 domestic flights in December 2025 alone. Over a three-day period that month, more than 3.64 lakh passengers were affected due to widespread disruptions. The cancellations were largely attributed to pilot scheduling issues and new flight duty time limitations.
The Centre noted that IndiGo has paid Rs 4,620.5 lakh so far towards compensation, adding that refunds linked to the mass cancellations in December-largely due to poor pilot scheduling and new flight duty time limitations-“have been processed and credited to the original mode of payment.”
However, the Centre acknowledged significant gaps in data collection. It said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation does not maintain airline-wise loss data or cumulative financial impact on passengers. There is also no official data on the number of stranded passengers who were denied refunds or alternative travel arrangements.
The disclosures highlight both the dominance of major carriers in India’s aviation sector and the lack of comprehensive data on the impact of large-scale disruptions on passengers.
