India Urges Nationals In Iran To ‘Expeditiously Exit’ Country, Warns Against Approaching Borders

The Indian Embassy in Tehran has urged Indian nationals still in Iran to leave the country immediately using routes coordinated with the mission.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran on Wednesday issued a fresh advisory urging Indian nationals still in Iran to leave the country at the earliest as the security situation in the region remains uncertain despite a tentative ceasefire.

“In continuation of the advisory of 07 April 2026, and in light of recent developments, Indian nationals still in Iran are strongly advised to expeditiously exit Iran, in coordination with the Embassy and using the routes suggested by the Embassy,” the mission said in its April 8 advisory.

The embassy emphasised that citizens should not attempt to travel independently to border points without prior approval.

“It is again reiterated that there should be no attempt to approach any international land border without prior consultation and coordination with the Embassy,” the advisory added.

The mission also shared emergency contact details to ensure continued communication with Indian nationals requiring assistance.

Emergency mobile numbers issued by the embassy included +989128109115, +989128109102, +989128109109 and +989932179359, while assistance is also available via email at cons.tehran@mea.gov.in.

The advisory indicated continued concern over safety conditions in Iran as regional tensions remain volatile.

EARLIER ADVISORY ASKED INDIANS TO REMAIN INDOORS

The latest directive follows an earlier advisory issued by the embassy instructing Indian nationals to remain indoors for 48 hours amid escalating tensions triggered by the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

In the previous advisory, the embassy issued specific instructions to minimise risk exposure.

“Indian nationals who are still in Iran must stay where they are for the next 48 hours, avoiding all electric and military installations and upper floors of multi-storey buildings, remaining indoors, and coordinating any highway movement strictly with the embassy,” the mission said.

It also advised those in temporary accommodation to avoid relocation. “Those in embassy-hired hotels should stay put indoors while maintaining regular contact with on-site embassy teams,” the embassy said, urging nationals to monitor official updates closely.

The advisory was issued after heightened tensions in the region following strong remarks from US President Donald Trump, warning of severe consequences if negotiations failed.

INDIA FACILITATES MOVEMENT OF NATIONALS AMID REGIONAL TENSIONS

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been coordinating the movement of citizens from conflict-affected areas across West Asia.

Additional Secretary (Gulf) Aseem R Mahajan confirmed that Indian nationals have already been assisted in leaving Iran through neighbouring countries.

“Our embassy in Tehran has so far facilitated the movement of 1,862 Indian nationals from Iran to Armenia and Azerbaijan for onward travel to India. This includes 935 Indian students and 472 Indian fishermen,” Mahajan said.

He stressed that authorities continue to closely track developments in the region.

“Our efforts remain focused on ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of the large Indian community in the region,” he added.

According to the MEA, a dedicated control room is functioning in coordination with Indian missions to assist citizens across West Asia.

The ministry also said it is working with state governments and other agencies to facilitate travel arrangements.

Since February 28, approximately 7,60,000 passengers have travelled from the region to India, with flights continuing to operate from countries where airspace remains open.

TENTATIVE CEASEFIRE BUT CONTINUED UNCERTAINTY IN REGION

The fresh advisory comes as Iran, the United States and Israel reached a tentative two-week ceasefire in the conflict that has shaken the Middle East and disrupted the global energy market.

However, questions remain about the scope and durability of the arrangement.

Donald Trump initially said Iran had proposed a “workable” plan to end the war launched on February 28, but later described the proposal as fraudulent without elaborating.

Israel backed the US ceasefire with Iran, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the deal does not cover ongoing fighting against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

This contradicted statements from Pakistan, which has been involved in mediation efforts and said talks on a broader peace plan could begin soon.

Meanwhile, Iran intends to maintain oversight of shipping through the Strait of Hormuza critical global oil transit route.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said passage through the strait would be allowed under Iranian military management, while a regional official indicated both Iran and Oman could charge transit fees on vessels passing through the chokepoint.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on all sides “to abide by the terms of the ceasefire in order to pave the way towards a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region.”

Despite the ceasefire announcement, missile alerts were reported in several Gulf countries, highlighting continued volatility in the region.
