India sent 5,000 tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh: Supply started from Numaligarh refinery amid Iran-Israel war, agreement to supply 1.80 lakh tonnes annually

Due to the ongoing tension in the Middle East, there is an energy crisis all over the world, in such a situation, India has started sending diesel to Bangladesh through cross-border pipeline from Numaligarh Refinery in Assam. Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) Chairman Mohammad Rezanur Rahman said that the first consignment of about 5,000 tonnes of diesel has reached Bangladesh by Tuesday.

Oil crisis in Bangladesh due to Iran war

Bangladesh is currently facing severe fuel shortage. The main reason for this is the interruption in global oil supply due to the America-Israel-Iran war. Bangladesh imports about 95% of its fuel needs from the Middle East.

Due to tension on routes like ‘Strait of Hormuz’ the supply is stopped. Due to this, long queues are forming at petrol pumps in Bangladesh. In many cities, the government has had to ration oil, where the limit has been fixed at 10 liters for bikes and 40 liters for cars.

Oil reaching Dinajpur through pipeline from Assam

This diesel is being sent through ‘India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline’. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the then PM Sheikh Hasina in March 2023. Starting from Numaligarh Refinery, the pipeline reaches Parbatipur depot in Dinajpur district of northern Bangladesh.

According to BPC officials, pumping started at 3:20 pm on Monday. About 113 tons of oil is being sent every hour, which will take about 44 hours to reach completely.

The India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline starts from the Numaligarh Refinery and runs to the Parbatipur depot in Dinajpur district of northern Bangladesh.

There is an agreement to supply 1.80 lakh tonnes annually

Under the annual agreement between India and Bangladesh, India will supply 1.80 lakh tonnes of diesel through pipeline every year. BPC Chairman Rezanur Rahman said, “This consignment of 5,000 tonnes is part of this agreement.

We are expected to get 90,000 tonnes of diesel in the next six months, which will stabilize the availability of fuel in our country.” Supply through pipeline is saving both time and money compared to railway tankers.

Relations between the two countries are improving again after tension

Energy relations between India and Bangladesh deteriorated after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024. The interim government of Mohammad Yunus had reviewed several agreements with India.

There was also a dispute regarding power supply from Adani’s Jharkhand power plant. However, now after the political changes in Dhaka, India sending diesel is a sign that energy ties between the two countries are back on track.

There was bitterness in relations after Haseena’s departure.

After Sheikh Hasina’s ouster, the interim government had described the electricity and gas agreements signed with India as ‘unfavorable in terms of terms’. Due to non-payment of dues, Adani Power had halved the supply, which was restored after the payment started in March 2025.

Experts say that considering the geographical location and existing infrastructure, India is the most reliable partner for Bangladesh.
