A fascinating confluence of fashion and cinema was seen on the red carpet of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) going on in Panaji, Goa on Tuesday evening. Shikha Karigri in association with DC Handloom presented a spectacular fashion show titled ‘Sarees in Motion: 70MM on Runway’, which told the story of seven decades of Bollywood through Indian handloom.

In this 15-minute show, every saree became the face of a film era. From the classic era of the 1940s to the experimental silhouettes of 2020, each pleat brought to life the glitz, rebellion, romance and glamor of Indian cinema.

More than 40 handloom sarees were shown on the ramp. The weaves of many states including Chhattisgarh’s Tussar Silk, UP’s Banarasi, MP’s Chanderi, Andhra’s Venkatagiri, Kerala’s Kuthampalli mesmerized the audience. Some of these sarees were hand painted by award winning artists, which also included glimpses of Pichwai, Pattachitra, Madhubani, Warli and Gond art.

After the show, Delilah Lobo, Vice President, Goa Entertainment Society, said, “This is the first fashion show of its kind at IFFI, which beautifully reflects the fusion of cinema, culture and fashion.” Prakash Magdum, MD, NFDC, said, “’Sari in Motion’ has beautifully presented the soul of India.”

Shikha Ajmera, promoter of Shikha Karigari, said, “Our aim is to bring the Indian weaving tradition to the world in a modern form. More than 100 award-winning artists from across the country are associated with our brand, who are giving new life to the heritage.”
