Amid the ongoing tension in the Middle East, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has directed City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies to give priority in providing Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections to commercial establishments like hotels, restaurants and canteens. So that they continue to get the necessary gas.

Government offices also advised to shift to PNG The ministry has written a letter to all the central ministries and state governments asking them to expedite the approvals related to gas infrastructure. The government wants the pending projects and new permissions to be cleared as soon as possible. Besides, all Central Government offices, colonies and canteens have also been advised to abandon LPG and start using PNG wherever possible.

Government increased LPG supply to states by 20% The Center has directed the states to increase LPG supply amid the ongoing gas crisis in the country. From March 23, states will now be given 20% more gas than before. After this, the total supply to the states will reach 50% of the pre-crisis level.

The government has said that in this increased gas supply, priority should be given to community kitchens, restaurants, dhabas, hotels and industrial canteens. Besides, instructions have been given to provide 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders to migrant laborers on priority.

What is ‘pre-crisis level’?

‘Pre-crisis level’ means the time when the gas crisis had not started in the country. At present the states were getting very less supply, which has now been increased to half (50%) of the old demand.

The US-Israel and Iran war has almost stopped the supply of crude oil and gas from the Middle East. Due to this, initially the LPG supply to commercial institutions like hotels was reduced, so that there is no problem in the supply of domestic cylinders.

Gas shortage due to Iran-America and Israel war

America and Israel jointly attacked Iran on 28 February 2026. Both countries launched massive airstrikes on several Iranian military bases, missile sites and nuclear facilities.

Many senior officials including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei were killed in these attacks. America named this campaign “Operation Epic Fury”.

After this war, tension increased in the Strait of Hormuz and supplies were affected. This route is very important for India, because about 80-85% of the country’s LPG comes from here. India is the world’s second largest LPG importer and imports more than 60% of the gas from outside.

Due to this, a situation like shortage of LPG was created in the country. However, the government asked people not to pay attention to rumors and clarified that there is no shortage of gas and oil in the country.
