2023 French Open quarterfinalist Holger Rune’s mother, Aneke, has revealed that the situation in Qatar is ‘brutal’ at night with the fireballs in the sky, adding that the former was really scared. Her comments came in the light of the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Rune has been in Doha for the past week, attending the Qatar Open. Although he could not compete because of an Achilles injury sustained late last season, he was seen training on-site and cheering on his fellow tennis stars during the matches.
Now, Holger and his team, including his mother and manager, Aneke Rune, are stranded in Doha as the conflict between Israel and Iran disrupts travel and airspace.
“It has been a wild night. We did not get much sleep. It all seems more brutal at night with the fireballs in the sky and repeated bangs. We spent quite a bit of time at the reception and they were super sweet, so we finally went to our rooms and slept,” Aneke said while speaking to TV2 Sports.
“But Holger was really scared last night. After all, it pours in with brutal news and images of attacks everywhere around us. Our flight is, of course, cancelled today and we now have no idea when we can get out,” Aneke added.
The ongoing confrontation between Israel and Iran escalated after months of stalled nuclear diplomacy with the United States and widening regional tensions. On Saturday, February 28, the US and Israel launched a large‑scale joint military offensive against Iran, targeting senior leaders, military installations, air defence systems and more, in what they described as a pre‑emptive move against Tehran’s capabilities.
Gas prices increased on Monday, adding further strain to the global economy. Qatar, a major exporter of liquefied natural gas, has seen the crisis intensify inflationary pressures worldwide.
