In a shocking twist to a family dispute, a hitman allegedly hired to kill a woman’s son ended up killing the woman herself and fleeing with cash and gold. The accused has now been arrested after absconding for 5 years.
Ajay Mishra was arrested by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch in Naroda, cracking a 2021 murder and robbery case from Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
According to police cited by India Today, Shakuntala Yadav and her younger son Amit Yadav had allegedly hired Mishra, who worked as a hospital security guard and was known to them, to kill her elder son. A deal worth Rs 4 lakh was agreed upon, with Rs 1 lakh paid in advance.
However, Mishra did not carry out the murder. Instead, he left for his native village. When Shakuntala and Amit later tracked him down and demanded their money back, he reportedly assured them that he would return it.
Months later, Mishra came back — but with a different plan.
According to investigators, he, along with an associate identified as Ketan Tiwari, visited Shakuntala’s house in Raipur when she was alone. Police said the two then decided to target her instead of the original plan.
They allegedly strangled the elderly woman using a rope and fled with around Rs 10 lakh in cash and 350–450 grams of gold jewellery. The stolen gold was later sold.
After the crime, Mishra went into hiding. He avoided using his phone and stayed away from official identification like PAN and Aadhaar cards. He kept changing locations before settling in Ahmedabad’s Naroda area in 2022, where he managed to stay unnoticed.
Following fresh leads, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch tracked him down and arrested him, ending his years-long escape. Police said further investigation is underway, and efforts are being made to locate other accused linked to the case.
