Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman speaks in the Rajya Sabha on March 27.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday dismissed rumours of a possible nationwide lockdown in India, calling them “baseless” and urging politicians and the public not to spread fear.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during a discussion on the Finance Bill, 2026, Sitharaman said, “Baseless rumours are being spread, and anything is being said just to create fear in the minds of the public. Where is this lockdown happening? It is happening in Pakistan, not in India.”

She also compared the situation with neighbouring countries, noting that India continues to manage its resources and citizen needs carefully. “Look at the situation in Bangladesh, I am not saying this to suggest they are in distress or suffering. No, I am only mentioning it as a matter-of-fact comparison. As a good neighbour, we are extending whatever help is being requested from our side. We are maintaining good neighbourly relations and providing assistance where needed,” she said.
“If Bangladesh is not able to utilise something, that is a separate matter. The situation has been affected due to developments in the Middle East, but we are managing it in a way that ensures our citizens do not face any difficulties,” the finance minister added.
