Born in a farmer family in Madhya Pradesh, Lalit’s journey reaches IIT Bombay, a corporate job, a failed startup and then the founding of India’s leading investment platform Grow.

Taking Grow to a market cap of over Rs 1 lakh crore in just 9 years is a testament to his vision, patience and customer-focus. They believe that success means proving yourself again every day. Come, let us know his story from him…

Lalit Keshare started his journey in a cafe with 4 friends.

When economic challenges increased, I worked in Flipkart.

My grandfather used to say – If you create value in the world, you get real happiness. These teachings of his motivate us till today. When I got selected in IIT Bombay in 1999, it was the era of IT boom. There was talk of startups everywhere. A desire to do something new and bigger also arose in my mind.

After leaving college, worked in an IT company for 7 years. Then started Edutech startup Edufilix with a passionate team. The objective was to provide good quality education content at affordable prices. We couldn’t scale.

This failure became the biggest lesson for me. I understood how important it is to have the right time for an idea. At that time the internet was slow, reach was less and the ecosystem was not ready. This is where I learned the importance of product-market fit and understanding the customer’s real problem.

When financial challenges increased, he joined Flipkart. There he learned how to run a business on a large scale. We four friends used to meet every Sunday in a cafe in Bengaluru. There the idea of simplifying investment was confirmed. The number of people investing in the country was very less, while the problem was big. When the time was right, we co-founders left our jobs and started Grow. Got support from family and mentors.

Grow’s biggest strength is listening to the customer. We read feedback daily and create products based on that. Mutual funds, trading, wealth management – every feature is the result of a need born from the ground up. Past successes don’t matter. Every day, every new product is a new battle, winning it is the real success.

9 big lessons from the life of Lalit, who has assets worth Rs 10 thousand crores

  • It is important to stay connected to the ground: Reading customer feedback every day is a reminder who the real boss is. It is dangerous to distance yourself from these customers after success.
  • Big dreams can also start with small means: Big ideas are born even while sitting in a small cafe. Lack of resources should not stop thinking.
  • Best school to learn job: Working in Flipkart taught me how to run a business on a large scale. Every job can prepare you for the next step.
  • It is not necessary that every problem demands advice: People don’t want guidance every time, they want a simple process. Removing complexity is often the greatest solution.
  • Asking the right questions solves half the problem: “Why aren’t people investing?” – this question set the direction for GROW. The right question leads to the right product, the answer shows the right steps.
  • Trust of family and spouse is the biggest asset: When there is support from home, decisions become stronger. One gets the power to take risks.
  • Be smart, but don’t stop listening: The smarter we become, the less we listen to people. For better products, people are needed who can keep ego away. Be extremely polite and listen to people.
  • Discipline and Routine: If the work is to your liking, the team is interesting and there is discipline in the routine, then there will be no room left for boredom in your life.
  • Continuity of Learning: Lalit reads everything from history, fiction to investing every day. This not only increases knowledge but also provides mental peace.
